Concord Consortium Technologies

The Concord Consortium, a non-profit educational research and development organization, is a leading innovator in the educational technology field. The Concord Consortium has been collaborating with the TELS Community since the inception of the original TELS project in 2003. Concord offers a library of rich and extremely powerful open-source, Java-based, modeling tools and works with TELS Community researchers and teachers to create custom-designed activities that are integrated into TELS curriculum projects.

Scientific Modeling Environments

  • Molecular Workbench

    Molecular Workbench offers a set of tools that can be used to compute and visualize the motion of ensembles of atoms and molecules. The motion of each entity is estimated using classical dynamics and applicable forces, as well as boundaries and bond formation/breaking rules. Molecular Workbench can be used to easily create activities based on molecular dynamics simulations and help clarify for students what is happening at the atomic level.

  • BioLogica

    BioLogica is a genetics model built on various inheritance patterns at the level of molecules, genes, and individuals. BioLogica can be used to develop student activities that embody increasingly elaborate models of the parts, processes, and mechanisms of genetics.

  • Dynamica

    Dynamica is a manipulable model for teaching and exploring the effect of forces on point masses in one and two dimensions. The model enables students to observe the effect of impulses or continuous forces on massive objects, and to represent those effects using graphs, tables, and other tools. Dynamica also supports the creation of game-like activities that pose increasingly difficult challenges involving Newtonian mechanics.


Pedagogica Software Environment
Pedagogica is a Java-based software tool that links manipulable computer-based models like Molecular Workbench, Dynamica, and BioLogica, (as well as other Flash and Java-based activities) to scripts that guide the students' interactions with the models. The scripts transform an open-ended model into a series of carefully structured learning activities. They set up challenges for students and tailor the appearance of tools and simplify the environment by presenting only those options that are relevant to the activity. Pedagogica also supports the real-time logging of student progress as they work on an activity.

The Concord Consortium is also developing MySystem, a Javascript/HTML-based diagramming and modeling environment that enables students to diagram connections and characterize the transformation of energy within systems.
